3D dental bone segmentation on CBCT

Correction and refinement of alveolar and maxillary bone segmentations on Cone-Beam CT scans of the jaw.

Context

A dental imaging vendor was training a model for 3D bone segmentation on Cone-Beam CT (CBCT) scans of the maxilla and mandible. The task required refined segmentations focused on the teeth-bearing regions, with strict exclusion of specific anatomical structures.

Objective

Deliver clean 3D bone segmentations covering the alveolar and maxillary bone up to sinus and nasal floors, including interproximal bone around teeth, and excluding the incisive canal and out-of-scope areas.

Approach

Dentists and radiology technicians experienced with dental CBCT were trained on the client's visual protocol using annotated reference cases. Focus zones were framed in the tool to concentrate effort inside the relevant regions, and structured checks addressed the exclusion rules on every case.

Outcome

The client received a targeted, high-quality dataset that matched the visual guidelines with limited rework. Time per case decreased steadily as annotators internalized the exclusion criteria typical of dental CBCT.
